Is Medium Having Trouble Paying the Bills?
Delayed payouts make me question the longevity of the platform once more.
Since the beginning of my journey writing on Medium, Medium has paid out like clock work. Reliably and predictably.
That is, until July of 2024.
Payouts for the month of June were a bit delayed. And while I don’t know the reason, that did raise a red flag for me. I reached out to Medium’s support in hopes that I could some answers.
All I was told was that the “June earnings for the Partner Program are still procesing” and that “we don’t have a specific ETA to share.”
Okay. Weird.
It was the first time something like this had happened with Medium - at least to my knowledge. And I suppose it was somewhat reassuring that I wasn’t alone. Others were in the same boat.
July’s earnings were paid out on time, but that brings me to August.
Instead of a nice payout for my writing from the month of August, instead I was greeted with a lovely email telling me that my Medium Partner Program rollover balance was $214.99 and would be held until it met the $10 minimum payout threshold.
Yes. You read that right.
$214.99 is larger than $10.
I mean, I was never great at math, but I’m pretty sure it is, right?
Medium CEO Tony Stubblebine reports in his State of Medium 2024 post that Medium is profitable.
While I’m absolutely happy to hear that, these two payout glitches do give me pause.
Medium support assures me that this is just a glitch and that earnings will indeed be sent on time, my concern is growing - especially when coupled with widespread complaints of falling earnings and disappointing stats.
Maybe it’s too early to be concerned, and maybe this is a nothing-burger.
But it does raise an eyebrow. Has anyone else seen this?
